The Hebrew Bible is an ancient collection of Jewish scripture that has been revered for thousands of years. The first five books are known as the Torah. The first four books are called the Law, and the last five books are called the Prophets. Most Christians refer to all of these holy texts as the Old Testament, while Jews refer to them as part of their respective sacred writings—the Tanakhs. These amazing tales have captivated readers for centuries, but they actually originated over 3000 years ago with a nomadic people known as Israelites or Hebrews who lived in Canaan, now modern day Israel and Palestine. Among the many characters in the Bible is a wealthy merchant named Abraham. He is one of the most amazing characters in history, and his story has inspired generations of Christians. The Bible is in fact a collection of four different books, which are arranged in an chronological order starting with Genesis through Esther. The stories are told by many different authors, some of whom are anonymous. These anonymous writers are given names when they are referenced by other authors in their epilogue. About 300 years after Moses’ death there were ten different works that had been added to what is known as the Bible today. These books that were added came to be known as the Apocrypha, or “hidden things. ” The Apocrypha are therefore not part of the canon of the Bible. There are two reasons why they are not included within the canon. First, much of these books were written by unknown authors, second, much of the teachings contained in these books conflict with what is taught in the canonical Bible. The Bible is a collection of ancient writings and describes events and characters that lived many centuries ago. The Hebrews and Egyptians had different methods for writing history than we do today, and writing history was often more about connecting one dynasty to another than it was about providing a detailed account of what actually happened. This is evident in the Bible, where many characters are named but their stories are not told. The volumes of the Bible were divided into chapters (Hebrew: "divrei") and verses (Hebrew: "mishpatei"). Each chapter was approximately 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 minutes long depending on the length of time it took Moses to write down all of the events he experienced. The length of a verse varied from one minute to a few minutes depending on how much space was needed to describe an event. The study of a book’s content involves a great deal more than merely reading its words. Traditionally, the books of the Bible were divided into chapters and verses to allow for study and quick reference. This is especially helpful when reading some of the longer books in the Bible. The last book of the Bible is termed “the Apocrypha” by some and “the Deuterocanonical” by others. The Apocrypha/Deuterocanonicals are known as “extracanonical works.” Some Protestants refuse to include this book in their collection of biblical literature because it was not originally part of the Hebrew Bible or Christian Old Testament—which they consider sacred scriptures.
